A big shout out to Wade and Ashlea who have been volunteering with us for a few years now. We are saying goodbye as they welcome their first child and move out of Sydney, so we wanted to say a huge thank you for all your hard work and passion for cleaner oceans!

Wade first came across Seabin during a “sustainability” subject during his MBA with Griffith University in Brisbane in 2019. He chose Seabin to research and loved the idea of cleaner oceans for the next generation. Upon completing this subject Wade and Ash moved to Sydney and they both became volunteers and have been apart of our citizen science program ever since.

Q & A with Wade:

What is your favourite part about volunteering with Seabin?

My favourite part of Seabin has to be the fact that we are contributing towards a greater purpose in finding a solution for plastics in our waterways. This is reflected every time we go to do a data collection, you see the amount of marine life within the square meter surrounding the Seabin, and you realize the impact microplastics have on just that small ecosystem. Your mind boggles about the bigger picture but keeps us motivated.

What is your background and why are you passionate about cleaner oceans?

My background is growing up as a kid in a small coastal town (Kiama) and enjoying the relationship with pristine local beaches and surroundings. Then moving to the big smoke to chase a career in investments etc I came to see more and more pollution in the city areas and noticed it’s a bit different to the waterways of the south coast of NSW. The passion is driven by wanting to leave this planet in a better condition than when we found it. Ash currently works in the Water business, which gives her an insight into this precious resource and loves getting involved with any innovative solution for cleaner waterways.

What is your most memorable experience volunteering with Seabin?

It would have to be spending our Sundays together down at Jones Bay Wharf and educating strangers who walk past asking “what are you doing there”.

Thanks again Wade and Ash, so awesome to have you apart of the Seabin family, all the very best for the move and welcoming your little one into the world!
