SOLUTION SERIES – 4th Article: Advocacy

In 2023 alone, Seabin captured 22.52 tonnes of marine litter in the Sydney Harbour and catalogued 4,772,648 plastic items. If these items were not collected, they would continue to remain in the ocean, impacting the health of the plants, animals, and people.

Marine plastic pollution is a big problem to tackle. Advocating for legislative action can help! Between 2022 and 2023, straws and some types of plastic bags were banned in Australia. This resulted in a decrease in the number of these items that have been found in Seabin catches! Below are some simple ways that you can advocate to turn the tide on marine plastic pollution.

  • If you see a restaurant, shop, or other outlet using non-sustainable products, talk to them about it! Offering alternatives or explaining the impact of plastic is an effective way to easily make a difference.
  • Spread the word! Tell your friends, family, and other community members about Seabin, plastic pollution and the importance of reducing our impact on the planet. Social media is another great way to spread the word and show your support.
  • Stop buying single use plastic as much as possible – demand creates supply, and if we stop buying from companies that produce these products, they will be forced to find alternatives.
  • Do your research. There are hundreds of articles, podcasts, videos and documentaries you can watch to get a better understanding of the pollution problem and how you as an individual can make a difference. Check out some of our favourites here!
  • Volunteer! If you have time to volunteer, there are many organisations (including Seabin Foundation!) fighting plastic pollution that could use dedicated advocates. No matter your skills, there is a way that you can help.
  • Speak to/ send letters to your local council and members of parliament discussing single use plastic bans in your area – this really helps!
  • Support legislation that reduces plastic pollution at the source- many countries and local areas are getting on board with production caps and banning certain single use plastics!

There you go, some simple ways that you can advocate for cleaner oceans. How will you start?
