Turning the Tide on Marine Plastic Pollution: Solution 3
SOLUTION SERIES – 3rd Article: Simple Behaviour Change

In 2023 alone, Seabin captured 22.52 tonnes of marine litter in the Sydney Harbour and catalogued 4,772,648 plastic items. If these items were not collected, they would continue to remain in the ocean, impacting the health of the plants, animals, and people.
Using plastic materials and products is simple and convenient, because companies and organisations have made it so. Thankfully, there are some simple behaviour changes that you can make in your everyday life to help turn the tide on marine plastic pollution.
- Eat/ drink in at cafes and restaurants if you forget your own cup or container.
- Avoid fast fashion by purchasing clothes that are ethically produced and will last longer with lower polyester/nylon and acrylic contents
- Shop at your local bulk food stores and bring your own jars or containers.
- Separate waste according to your local area’s waste and recycling programs. Take the time to split as accurately and in depth as possible.
- Companies such as RecycleSmart have soft plastic recycling programs. This is for clean plastic products that are scrunchy, think bread bags and chip packets. Find out if there is an option in your area.
- Be a conscious consumer. Research where you buy from and the composition of the products you buy. There are dozens of alternatives for plastic if you shop right.
There you have it, some easy ways that you can change your everyday behaviour to help reduce plastic use. Stay tuned for part four of the series, for another solution to help turn the tide on marine plastic pollution.
