THE GLOBAL PLASTIC TREATY: AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE FOR HUMANITY
A Path to Ending Plastic Pollution: Understanding the Global Plastic Treaty
We are now living in a new era – the Plastic Era. 462 million tons of plastic is used annually (WWF, 2023), making the idea of living a plastic-free life far from our reality. Plastic, if used correctly, is a very useful material. However, it shouldn’t be used for single use items, that are going to stay forever on our planet. Sadly, most of the plastic we use will end up in landfill as recycling rates are very low globally (~10%). This plastic also pollutes at an alarming and increasing rate, with an estimated 9 million to 14 million tons of plastic waste ending up in our oceans every year (WWF, 2023).
Plastic pollution has become one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time. Recognising this, nations around the world are working towards a groundbreaking international agreement—the Global Plastic Treaty. This treaty aims to tackle plastic pollution at its roots, focusing on prevention, reduction, and sustainability. But how will it work and how are nonprofits, like Seabin Foundation, contributing to its progress? Read along to find out!
What is the Global Plastic Treaty?
The Global Plastic Treaty is an ambitious initiative championed by the United Nations to curb the growing plastic pollution crisis. By addressing every stage of the plastic lifecycle, it aims to shift the global approach from reaction to prevention. This treaty goes beyond cleanup efforts, targeting systemic change to reduce plastic production, eliminate unnecessary waste, and ensure a circular economy.
The Global Plastic Treaty can be seen as the plastic pollution counterpart to the Paris Agreement on climate change. Just as the Paris Agreement brought nations together to tackle the global challenge of carbon emissions and limit global warming, the Global Plastic Treaty aims to unite countries in addressing the devastating effects of plastic pollution.
If successfully adopted, the treaty would mark a historical moment, committing countries to legally binding measures that cut plastic waste generation and its impact on oceans, wildlife, and communities. The treaty is expected to address a spectrum of issues, including:
- Promoting reduction in plastic production globally
- Implementing sustainable alternatives and scaling up reuse systems
- Holding corporations accountable for the life cycle of their products, from production to disposal
- Supporting communities disproportionately affected by plastic pollution

Seabin Foundation and Nonprofits: Advocacy for a Plastic-Free Future
Nonprofit organisations play a critical role in driving public awareness and policy change efforts to tackle plastic pollution. With its mission to reduce marine plastic pollution, Seabin Foundation doesn’t just advocate for cleaner oceans but also educates and inspires communities to embrace sustainable practices.
The upcoming final meeting (INC-5) on the Global Plastic Treaty in Busan, South Korea (November 25 to December 1, 2024), will bring together several key nonprofit organisations advocating for impactful solutions to plastic pollution. Notable participants include Greenpeace International; Break Free From Plastic; and GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives), and regional organisations like Our Sea of East Asia Network (OSEAN). Together, these nonprofit organisations are working to ensure the treaty includes strong, enforceable commitments to tackle plastic pollution globally, similar in ambition to the Paris Agreement’s approach to climate change.

Key Highlights of the Treaty
The Global Plastic Treaty isn’t just about bans; it’s about fostering systemic transformation. Here are some important points:
- Legally Binding Commitments
Countries would commit to enforceable measures to phase out unnecessary single-use plastics and incentivise the adoption of alternatives. This marks a shift from voluntary agreements to accountable actions.
- Circular Economy Approach
By reimagining how plastic is designed, produced, and reused, the treaty aims to establish a closed-loop system where waste becomes a resource rather than pollution.
- Equity and Inclusion
Communities most affected by plastic waste, often in developing nations, will receive support for clean-up efforts and sustainable waste management practices.
- Monitoring and Transparency
The treaty will require nations and corporations to report on plastic production, waste management, and emissions, ensuring accountability through global oversight.
- Funding Mechanisms
International funding is expected to assist countries in implementing treaty obligations, particularly in scaling up waste management systems and sustainable infrastructure.
Why It Matters Now
The numbers are staggering: emphasising again that every year, around 9-14 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans, harming marine life, polluting beaches, and even entering the food chain. If we continue on this path, plastic pollution will triple by 2040. The Global Plastic Treaty represents our best chance to reverse this trend and safeguard ecosystems for future generations.
By uniting nations, industries, and nonprofit organisations, this treaty will redefine global priorities, placing the health of the planet above convenience.

How You Can Support
Nonprofit organisations like Seabin Foundation rely on collective action. Here’s how you can contribute:
- Advocate: Use your voice to demand strong commitments from your local representatives during treaty negotiations.
- Donate: Support nonprofits working tirelessly to clean the oceans and push for policy changes.
- Petitions: Signing petitions organised by nonprofits demonstrate widespread public support, sending a strong message to policymakers and negotiators that people demand action on plastic pollution.
- Engagement: Following nonprofit campaigns, attending relevant events, sharing content online and encouraging others to join the movement—it’s a simple yet powerful way to make your voice heard.
- Adopt Sustainable Habits: Small steps like reducing the usage of plastics and learning about the myths and facts about recycling in your community can have a big impact when scaled across communities.
The Global Plastic Treaty is more than just a policy framework—it’s an urgent call for collective action. By supporting its objectives, we can imagine a future where oceans are clean, ecosystems are protected, and plastic pollution becomes a problem of the past.
