Sydney, the first City Pilot by Seabin
In July 2020, Seabin™ embarked on a 12-month pilot study to regularly monitor and report the prevalence of marine debris in Sydney Harbour, Australia. After identifying a knowledge gap in the coastal zone region of plastic abundance data, Seabin™ aimed to facilitate and collate baseline data. The Sydney City Pilot achieved this through daily monitoring of Seabin’s for marine debris weight as well as collecting valuable data from each catch on the diversity of plastics captured.

The Sydney City Pilot involved the installation of 16 Seabins at 8 locations spread strategically throughout Sydney Harbour to provide a spatial representation of the catchment.
Using the baseline data gathered, historical weather data overlays were compared with daily catch data to reveal correlations. Daily catch weights were positively influenced by environmental factors, rainfall and predominant wind. sydney city pilot

What is 100 Smart Cities by 2050?
Our 100 Smart Cities program involves the community, including volunteers, private companies, corporate companies, the government, and individuals who want to be part of a global solution to plastic pollution.
The collective aim is to turn off the pollution tap through behavioural change, to protect our oceans and ensure a healthy and prosperous planet for all species in the near and distant future.
Great! What does it do?
- Clean-up and recovery of plastics, microplastics, microfibres, oil, fuel and more
- Supports cities in becoming “Cleaner Destinations” for economic benefit
- Reduces a city’s environmental footprint and visibly improves water quality
- Creates world-first data sets that support decision-makers
- Creates partnerships and collaboration opportunities with educational and research institutes
- Creates world-first Microplastics data to be used in supporting and creating best practices, legislation, and policies
- Monitors taxpayer-funded initiatives like single-use plastic bans, plastic bag bans etc
- Better informs communities and key stakeholders about the problem of microplastics and plastic pollution in our waterways and oceans Creates employment
In conclusion, the Seabin pilot study in Sydney Harbour is an incredible achievement that brings us one step closer to understanding the extent of plastic pollution in our oceans. The data gathered from the daily monitoring of 16 Seabins at 8 locations has provided a wealth of information on the weight and diversity of marine debris, as well as correlations with environmental factors such as rainfall and wind. This information is invaluable in our ongoing efforts to combat plastic pollution and protect our precious marine ecosystems. It’s amazing to see the impact that technology like Seabin can have on our understanding of the ocean and our ability to take action to protect it. Let’s keep pushing forward and working together to create a cleaner and healthier planet for all!
