Top Sustainable And Plastic-Free Gift Ideas for Christmas
T’is the season of joy, giving, celebration and STUFF! All the wrapping paper, plastic packaging, and mass-produced gifts leave a toll on our planet from single-use items. This year, why not make your Christmas a little greener? Choosing sustainable, plastic-free gifts not only helps the environment but also makes for meaningful presents that your loved ones will cherish.
Whether you’re shopping for family, friends, or colleagues, these eco-friendly gift ideas will inspire you to make a more conscious and meaningful gift.
1. Gift an Experience

Sometimes the best gifts are ones that make for a memorable experience and outing. Reduced packaging, clutter free and minimalist, easy to personalise and supporting local businesses are just some of the ways in which we think this might be the best gift of the lot. Whether it is a restaurant voucher, membership/subscription to the theatre, wellness centre, cooking class, pottery class, and wine or distillery tasting are just some of the ways in which you can give the gift of a tailored and sustainable experience.
With Sydney Festival around the corner in January, there are loads of different events you may not know are coming up. Check out different venues, ticket sales or when your next favourite artist is in town. And here are some more great ideas: Colt Classic movies in an art deco bar/cinema at Golden Age Cinema, a weekend getaway somewhere regional with Unyoked, sight-seeing of Sydney’s architecture and abandoned buildings open to the public, or a ticket for the Sydney Open 2025, or find a guided tour at your nearest national park.
2. Gift a DIY Hamper

See the trend here? Coming up with more tailored ways to give gifts is a way you can make a more conscious and meaningful Christmas present. Choose a charming basket or decorative box and fill it with shredded (repurposed) paper for cushioning. Consider the recipient’s interests: homemade treats, favourite teas, or a small plant are great options. If they enjoy crafts, add art supplies or a DIY kit. Include a handwritten note for a personal touch. You can choose sustainable and fair-trade goodies: from organic loose-leaf teas, fair-trade chocolate treats, local honey, a box of mangoes sold on the side of the road, Olive Oil and vinegar dressing sets and any other type of snack you know they can’t get enough of.
3. Give the Gift of Knowledge

Books aren’t the only form of knowledge you can gift, and yes, we do have some recommendations for you. There are so many good ways in which you can give the gift of knowledge. In whatever industry you might be in or that someone you are gifting to is in, there are always ways to engage further with their content and knowledge through industry talks and events. A subscription service to a magazine (preferably electronic) that might be design-related, newspaper outlet, gardening or hobbie-related. Have a wander through your local news agency to get ideas. Books can be consumed in so many ways through eBooks, Kindles and hard copies, but here are some recommendations we think are great.
“Sustain” Groundbreaking Recipes and Skills That Could Save The Planet by Jo Barrett might be our favourite cookbook and her ethos around sustainability is so inspiring.
“Uses for Obsession” by Ben Shewry gives us a new perspective on how we think about restaurants and the industry. Whilst it is intimate and confronting. it also has our approved OBSESSION level lasagne recipe with 10 commandments to live by when it comes to lasagne.
In “What I Ate in One Year: (And related thoughts)” by Stanley Tuccici, he writes: “sharing food is one of the purest human acts”, and we couldn’t agree more.
Oh, and try and buy from a local bookstore (or even from an op shop!) and not a big chain :)
4. Give Second-Hand Gifts

Let’s normalise second-hand gifts! Second-hand gift ideas contribute to the circular economy and reduce the demand for newly produced products and their impact through the product life cycle. Whether you are visiting an Op Shop, or Reverse Garbage , doing incredible things giving new life to old household items, or at a clothing and artisan market, these gift idea promotes so many ways in which you can reduce your impact, support local and charity businesses at affordable prices without compromising on creativity and unique gifts.
5. Support Local Brands and Small Businesses
Buying from local brands and small businesses is a meaningful way to support your community and create a positive impact. Small businesses often source locally, which reduces the carbon footprint of transportation and keeps money circulating within the community. Unlike big corporations, they are more likely to prioritise sustainable practices, such as eco-friendly packaging and ethical production methods. Supporting small businesses helps create jobs, fosters innovation, and celebrates unique, high-quality products that reflect the local culture. By choosing small over big, you’re investing in people, your neighbourhood, and a brighter, more sustainable future.
Back during COVID, there was an awesome hashtag #buyfromthebush, which promoted ways (for businesses who were missing out on foot traffic from tourism) in which people could gift products from regional stores through exposure via social media hashtags. #BuyFromTheBush even has a website in which they are sharing local businesses. At Seabin Foundation, we are all about strengthening community connections and finding out about local retailers and businesses is an awesome story to bring with your gift idea.
Your gift could be a card pack, a colouring book or a tote bag from the Seabin Foundation shop site!
We hope these gift ideas spark some creativity in how you can spice up your gift-giving this plastic-free Christmas. By making a conscious choice you can still spread joy while protecting the planet.
