Many of us have been questioning how to navigate the cost-of-living crisis while staying sustainable this Christmas. Read along to find out how Seabin Foundation is tackling this issue!

As November ticks on, the hunt for the perfect Christmas tree begins! But which choice is truly eco-friendly? We’ve made a list and checked it twice, diving into the most sustainable Christmas tree options out there—whether real or fake. From native trees supported by local councils to creative options, here’s how to reduce marine plastic pollution and keep this Christmas season merry and environmentally conscious!

Here’s What You Told Us

We recently asked our community about their Christmas tree preferences, and here’s what we found:

  • 50% of respondents use a fake Christmas tree
  • 11% prefer a real tree
  • 39% skip the tree altogether

Each choice has its own benefits and environmental impacts. Whether reusing an artificial tree, supporting a sustainable real tree option, or choosing no tree, every decision can contribute to a greener holiday season!

How to Care for Your Fake Christmas Tree That You Already Have to Make it More Sustainable

A well-cared-for artificial Christmas tree can last many years, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Here’s how to get the most out of yours while keeping it eco-friendly:

Keep it Indoors

Artificial trees aren’t made to withstand the elements, so keep yours indoors. This will prevent damage from weather exposure, helping it last longer. It also means that it will not become an easy source of loose plastics released into the environment and waterways, which are then very difficult to recognise due to their near-perfect camouflage.

Store it Properly

After the holiday season, store your tree in a cool, dry place. Use the original box or a storage bag to protect it from dust and moisture. Proper storage can greatly extend the life of your tree.

Tend to Breakages Quickly

If any branches or pieces on your tree become damaged, clean up the debris immediately to avoid plastic pieces ending up in the environment. They may look natural, but it’s important to remind ourselves that they belong in the bin, not with other leaves and branches outside. Small repairs with glue or tape can also help keep your tree looking festive year after year.

By taking these small steps, you’ll ensure that your artificial tree remains in great condition, allowing you to enjoy a sustainable and waste-free Christmas for many seasons to come!

Eco-Friendly Christmas Tree Ideas

The DIY Tree

Craft your own Christmas tree! Gather sticks, driftwood, or any natural materials you can find to create a rustic, one-of-a-kind tree that’s eco-friendly and budget-friendly. You can find inspiration from a quick search online. Simply search for “Home-made Christmas tree”

The Native Tree

Search for a native plant nursery near you and pick out your favourite plant. There are some awesome native pines that make for the perfect Christmas trees! Some local councils even offer native plant giveaways (check your local government’s website)! Use your native plant as a Christmas tree, then plant it later for a lasting Christmas memory.

The Plant Tree

Instead of a traditional tree, why not decorate a potted plant or a larger indoor plant you already own? It’s a simple, waste-free way to bring holiday cheer indoors.

Upcycle and Thrift

Visit thrift stores like Vinnies (Australia), check Facebook freebies groups, or repurpose items you already have, like old books or other used holiday decorations, to build a tree or unique display. This approach saves money and reduces demand for new plastic items.

Choosing an eco-friendly Christmas tree is a simple but impactful way to celebrate sustainably this holiday season. Whether you’re crafting a DIY tree, supporting native plants, or upcycling decorations, every small effort helps reduce waste and protect our oceans from plastic pollution.

How To Dispose of Your Real Tree

If you are planning on using a real tree, make sure it has been sustainably harvested and dispose of it correctly. In most major cities, there are tree recycling initiatives; the City of Sydney will pick up the tree post-Christmas for free. They also advise that you can break up the tree and put it in the green curbside bin to be composted.

This year, give a gift to the sea by choosing a greener option that brings joy without harming the environment. Ready to make the switch? Let’s make this Christmas plastic-free and memorable for all the right reasons! Share your ideas with the hashtag #PlasticFreeChristmasSF
