Seabin Foundation Welcomes a Second Cohort of Macquarie Uni Student Interns
Seabin Foundation is committed to working with communities to address marine plastic pollution. One way that local students can get involved is through internships! This spring, Seabin Foundation has partnered with the Macquarie University PACE program to welcome a second cohort of masters students.
The PACE program offers students the opportunity to participate in real-world learning opportunities. Through this placement, students can build professional skills, network with leading professionals, and contribute to positive social change. The August-October 2024 cohort consists of students in the Media, Marketing, and Creative Industries degree programs.

Meet The Interns:
Galen Banfield
Galen is a Media and Marketing student at Macquarie University. Fun fact: he also loves cats! During his time with Seabin Foundation, he developed ideas for potential campaigns that can be used to address the five key areas of plastic pollution that Seabin Foundation is trying to address at the moment. Galen chose to complete his internship with Seabin Foundation because he feels that “looking after our Earth is important and a responsibility that needs to be shared by all of us and I wanted the opportunity to develop skills in campaign creation to help get greater public support for this. Seabin Foundation provided the perfect opportunity.”

Julie Savinova
Julie is a Creative Industries international student from Russia. She is currently working as a freelancer and social media manager, with a special interest in creating an online persona and image for her clients. Julie chose to intern with Seabin Foundation because she was curious to learn more about marine pollution and what people can do to prevent it. She is helping with Seabin Foundation PR, in particular messaging and campaigns regarding artificial turf use. “I’ve loved to share my expertise and help such a great cause. I’ve learned a lot about environmental issues and how we can address them. I truly appreciate the opportunity to apply my skills and explore my ideas during my time with you.”

John Abi Nader
John is an international student at Macquarie University. During his time with Seabin Foundation, he has been leveraging his AI video-making knowledge and graphic design background to review content material for Seabin Foundation’s campaigns and social media as well as helping to develop subtitles and translations for the Ocean Health Course.

Jess Wiggins
Jess is a Creative Industries international student from the United States and she loves to go hiking. She helped with website upkeep and contributed to the Seabin Foundation blogs and newsletter. With her bachelors in biology, Jess always had an interest in creative industries. “This internship with Seabin Foundation gave me the opportunity to combine my passion for both environmental conservation and writing to actually make a difference while also gaining valuable work experience.”

Creating a More Sustainable Future
This partnership between Seabin Foundation and Macquarie University serves as an excellent example of the valuable intersection between creative fields and science.
