After a 12-month program filtering the water in Brunswick Heads Marina, we found some interesting insights that led us to create land-based solutions to help reduce litter and protect our oceans. We were able to record the lowest quantity of plastics captured when compared to other Seabins around the world, with only around 600 plastic items collected in 12 months compared to over 50,000 items in Jakarta.Smart City Program Sydney

One of the most prevalent types of litter found in the marina was fishing line filaments, which seemed to be most prevalent after a rain or weather event. This led us to the idea of creating Fishing Tackle Bins to encourage responsible disposal of fishing line and tackle, and prevent it from ending up in our oceans where it can harm marine life.

We also found that cigarette butts were prevalent on land around the marina. Cigarette filters are made from plastic fibers and can take years to break down, making them a major source of marine pollution. To tackle this issue, we created Cigarette Bins to encourage the responsible disposal of cigarette butts and prevent them from entering the ocean.

Our findings led to a second-stage program in collaboration with the Byron Shire Council and the NSW Environmental Protection Authority to deploy the new Fishing Tackle and Cigarette Bins around the marina. With the help of our supporters, we can work together to stop litter before it enters our oceans and protect marine life.

It’s important to remember that we all have a role to play in protecting our oceans and the environment. By making small changes in our daily lives, such as properly disposing of litter, we can help reduce pollution and preserve our planet for future generations. Thank you for your support in this crucial mission.
