In 2019 Seabin™️ pivoted from a retail unit-based sales model and embarked on its new and ambitious 100 Cities Program. After installing over 1100 Seabin units in 53 countries, Seabin™ transitioned its focus to urbanised waterways, starting with the Sydney City Pilot in Australia. Launched in July 2020, it presented data on the extent of the marine debris problem in Sydney Harbour. It provided proof of concept for the effectiveness of repetitive data sampling and servicing as the first case study in the “100 cities by 2050” Program, the aim of the Seabin™ Smarter Cities for Cleaner Oceans campaign.

The Smarter Cities for Cleaner Oceans campaign uses a business model that includes data, marine debris prevention, community activation and social licence, employment opportunities, and clean-up. This proved to be a scalable and financially sustainable model. Seabin™ Smarter Cities for Cleaner Oceans is an effective and necessary line of defence between upstream debris issues and oceanic plastic pollution.

City Programs implemented in new cities, provide the infrastructure and servicing to report on the extent of the marine debris problem in harbours, rivers and marinas. The aim of the “100 Cities by 2050” campaign is to have a significant reach through a social licence to reduce leakages, debris and consumption of single use plastics, understanding best practices in each “Smart City” and apply the solutions globally through reports, recommendations and mitigation.
