Solomon Wadani our Data and Program Manager at Seabin Foundation hosted 2 Primary School STEM lessons this month thanks to the Newcastle Ports community contribution fund as part of our Newcastle STEM Litter Prevention Campaign.

The first lesson was held at Kurri Kurri Public School, where 500 students attended from different age groups, broken into kindergarten, stage 1, stage 2, and stage 3. The second lesson was held at Jewells Public School, where 150 students attended.

During the lessons, students learned about how the Seabins work and the types of plastics that are captured by them. They were also educated on how they can curb the use of plastics in their day-to-day life. The students participated in a STEM activity where they were divided into groups and tasked with creating a robot based on an ocean animal that could gather all the plastic pollution in the ocean.

Seabin School STEM lessons

The STEM lessons were not only a great opportunity for the students to learn about the importance of ocean conservation, but it also encouraged them to think creatively and come up with ideas that could help solve the problem of ocean pollution. It is important to teach children from a young age the significance of ocean conservation, as they are the future leaders who will be responsible for protecting our planet.

Seabin Foundation believes that education is key to making a positive impact on the environment. By educating young people, they hope to inspire the next generation of environmentalists who will work towards creating a cleaner and more sustainable future. The Foundation is grateful to Newcastle Ports community contribution fund and both Kurri Kurri Public School and Jewells Public School for hosting the STEM lessons.

In conclusion, the Seabin Foundation’s commitment to educating future generations is a crucial step in the fight against ocean pollution. Their STEM lessons not only teach children about the importance of ocean conservation but also encourage them to think creatively and come up with innovative solutions to tackle the problem. We must continue to educate and inspire young people to protect our planet and create a more sustainable future.
